Sikkim Games : Bridging Heritage and Digital Gaming in the Himalayas

Traditional Games of Sikkim

Sikkim’s traditional games are deeply rooted in the state’s indigenous cultures, particularly among the Lepcha, Bhutia, and Nepali communities. These games are often community-based and reflect the values of teamwork, strategy, and physical endurance.

1. Degor

One of the most popular traditional games, Degor is similar to shot put or lawn bowling. It involves throwing a pair of stone or wooden discs (called degors) toward a target from a set distance. Played mainly by the Bhutia community, it requires precision and strength.

2. Archery

Archery is more than just a sport in Sikkim—it’s a cultural event. Especially popular among the Nepali community, traditional archery contests are often held during festivals and gatherings. Players use handmade bows and arrows and aim at small targets from a long distance, surrounded by music, food, and celebrations.

3. Kabaddi and Dandi Biyo

These rural sports are common in the countryside. Kabaddi promotes stamina and teamwork, while Dandi Biyo (a stick-and-peg game) is more recreational and often played by children.

Modern Sports and State Participation

In recent years, Sikkim has actively promoted modern sports. With its clean air and high-altitude terrain, it has become a nurturing ground for athletes in football, boxing, athletics, and martial arts.

1. Football Fever

Football is arguably the most popular sport in Sikkim. The state has produced several professional players, the most famous being Bhaichung Bhutia—India’s football icon. Sikkim also has local football clubs and holds state-level tournaments, boosting youth engagement in the sport.

2. Adventure Sports

The state's natural landscape supports adventure sports like trekking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and paragliding. These are gaining traction among both locals and tourists, contributing to the sport and eco-tourism economy.

The Rise of Digital Gaming in Sikkim

Like much of India, Sikkim’s youth are now turning to mobile and online games. With increasing internet penetration and smartphone usage, digital gaming has emerged as a popular pastime. Popular games include PUBG Mobile, Free Fire, and Call of Duty Mobile, as well as Indian-origin platforms like Ludo King.
